Beginning to think of New Year’s resolutions

December 31st, 2008 2 comments

Typically I don't do resolutions.  If I keep waiting for 'the right date' to do something then it never happens.

But it's that time of year so …

I think I'm going to try to be more girly.  Dresses/skirts rather than pants.  Some makeup.  Maybe do something with my hair besides blow dry it.  Not that much of a change but enough.

And far more attainable than saying I'm going to lose X pounds.  Trust me.

It is now a game of Chicken

December 29th, 2008 2 comments

The after-Christmas sales are in progress with all the holiday merchandise at 50% off.  Of course, being the *ahem* thrifty person that I am I'm going to wait until things hit about 75%.

Turns out I'm not the only one.  I heard several people say they were going to wait until the prices came down some more.

Of course the stores want to get as much as they can for this stuff.  So there's no telling when the next markdown will be.

As I said, it's a game of Chicken.  Buyers are waiting for the prices to drop, sellers are trying to keep the prices as high as they can for as long as they can.

The necklace I made

December 28th, 2008 1 comment

The pictures aren't back from the wedding yet, of course, but I did take a picture of the necklace I made prior to stuffing it into the jewelry making supply tackle box for reuse.

There's matching earrings that I didn't try to get into the picture.

For whatever reason the strands weren't perfectly aligned even though I had them consistent over the shoulders and on a triple strand clasp.  You can see it a little in the way the center beads are a bit off kilter.  Something to work on, if I decide to make another one.

It was also just a tad long so maybe take the individual strands an inch or so shorter.  Right now they're two inches apart (each strand is two inches longer than the one above it) so next time I might try one inch.  That's the fun of making your own jewelry.  You can always make it differently the next time.

What are the odds?

December 27th, 2008 No comments

Red fabric.  White cleaning rags.  Hot water.  Bleach.  Washing machine.

Who could ever have predicted pink cleaning rags would come out of that combination?

A couple of washes (in hot water, with bleach) will fix it but for now we have pretty pink cleaning rags.

Update – it wasn’t just the one store

December 27th, 2008 4 comments

I went about my merry way, returning the things that needed returning.

Of the three additional stores, two of them tried to insist on store credit or putting the refund back on the original card.

The third just asked for any card of mine and put the money on, no questions.

The two that were being less than cooperative?  One of them gave me cash because Mr. Rastl used debit and not credit and therefore it was considered 'cash' and the other finally gave in and put it on my card as well.

I'm tellin' ya.  This was a large headache and much more work than it should have been.  I had receipts, I couldn't get money.

Stupid store return policies

December 26th, 2008 No comments

OK – I admit that I was returning gifts.  That's why I asked for the receipts.  The thought behind them was lovely but …

First return, no issue.  Walk in with item and receipt, walk out with cash.  Perfect.

Second return, issue.  This is where I get detailed.  And yes, this is after I've calmed down and expressed my displeasure at the corporate level.

I had the item and the gift receipt.  My return options were store credit or a check mailed from Corporate, that may get to me in a week or four.  Neither one was acceptable.  I don't shop at that store (and never will again) while waiting for the check means missing all the good sales coming up.

I also had the purchase receipt.  So they processed the return.  And put the money back on the card that purchased the gift.  They didn't tell me that would happen, they knew I wanted cash.  But they still put it back on the card that purchased it.

So now I have no gift, no money, the person knows I returned it, and they have the money back.  Tell me how this is good customer service?

If you're interested, the store is Kohls Department Store.  So think good and hard before buying gifts there because unless you pay cash whomever you gift is going to get shafted if they need to do a return.

We had enough issues this holiday season that this one is just another big steaming one on the pile.  The only good that might come out of this is that I was going to give Mr. Rastl the money to buy the one thing on his list that I didn't get him because I had already purchased his expensive gift.

And no, this wasn't something that was on my list.  It was something he bought on impulse.  Lovely thought but it just wasn't something that was right for me.

You Are Biscotti

You are a very direct, honest person.

You are good at understanding difficult subjects. Understanding people? Not so much.

Chores, promises and silliness

December 24th, 2008 No comments

My kitchen looked like a bomb went off in it.  This isn't good.  After work I rolled up my sleeves (literally) and got it back into shape.  It didn't take long but it had to be done.  I'm much happier now.

After watching a 'funniest commercials' show I finally hemmed a pair of pants for the neighbor that have been here far too long.  Again, it didn't take that long but it was one thing on a long list of things to do.  Now it's done and we can return them tomorrow.

World Works Games put out a free Christmas tree download and I finished up the night by getting that prepped.  Hopefully tomorrow I can finish it up and we'll have a pretty little tree to put .. somewhere.  And then we have one for whatever reason in the games we play.

The weather is supposed to be quite unpleasant tomorrow and since it's Christmas Eve we get a short day at work.  I'm not driving in that muck for a half day.  I'll work from home and stay safe.

I was going to start on some drapes for one of the bedrooms but a couple of things halted that effort.  One was an uneven edge on the fabric that I didn't notice until too late (I can salvage two panels) and the other was a lack of matching thread to edge the pieces.  I didn't continue – too late at night to think.

Last night I did do a little busy work and iron up all the remnants I picked up for making doll clothes.  They're all nice and smooth now.  I'm plotting little costumes in my copious spare time.  And I have to grab the latest ad from the fabric store to make my shopping list for the three day sale.  As always there's stuff I need/want and heck, it will be on sale.

I have my life back

December 22nd, 2008 No comments

Well, kinda.

The wedding went very well and ended up with them actually getting married.  So overall it's a success.

The dress looked very nice, except for the odd bit in the back I couldn't fit.  Luckily it was covered by the jacket.  Even more luckily one of the costumers was hanging around the bride dungeon and was able to look at it and see what needed to be changed.  It's an alteration on the back seams between the armhole and the waist.  Actually a pretty simple fix and change to the pattern.

No one tripped.  No one got silly during the ceremony.  We ladies only had one hankie between us so we kept passing it around.  Now I have to wash four colors of eyeliner out of it.  It was worth it.

Surprisingly (or not) I was the only person to have the foresight to bring a nippy flask, filled with the bride's choice.  My seat at the head table turned into a very popular stop.  Old time participants from the Renaissance Faire recognized it immediately and mostly took a nice little nip, just to take the edge off.  The photographer saw it leaning up against my bouquet on the table and just had to get a picture.

She was quite amazed.  Most of the ladies in the wedding party had been involved with the royal court out at the Renaissance Faire at some point.  So it was second nature to take our position and move accordingly.  And when it was time for pictures we all immediately turned correctly, grouped correctly, looked at the right place, and kept the post and the smile until she said we could stop.  Some training you never forget.

I had more fun at the reception than I expected.  I saw some very old friends and met some new ones.  Besides slopping something on the front of my dress (big surprise there) I was just fine.  I sadly didn't overindulge in cake like I had hoped to do but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I still have a hairstyle from all this.  I won't go into what went into making this happen but suffice to say that I got very odd looks from children as we drove to the church.  Eventually it turned into a hairstyle.

We were out of the hall by 6:00pm, which was very good for a Sunday wedding.  I came home, got a foot rub from Mr. Rastl, did some computer work I had promised him I would do (he was pleased, not only with the work but that I remembered) and then made the cookies needed for tomorrow's cookie exchange at work.  I ended up 3 cookies over the amount I needed to make, which is as close as I care to cut it.  I had some leftover melted chocolate so I dipped some mini marshmallows, just for fun.

Then I wrapped the gift for our secret santa exchange tomorrow.  I'm pretty well set but it will take me a couple of trips from the car to the office to bring everything in.  Not a problem except that it's brass moneky cold out there.

I checked the weather.  Looks like more snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Good thing there's no paint night this week so I don't have to worry about making the trip.

So what's left to do?  Wrap Mr. Rastl's presents.  Make fleece coats for the dogs.  Plan some new dolls to make.  paint a new mini for my new character in our new game.  Clean up the disaster that is my kitchen.  Alter the dress pattern and see how it fits, making a new dress of course.

Except for a few time sensitive ones up there the rest are rather fluid.

I’m free!

December 21st, 2008 No comments

The dress is hemmed.  My satin torture is over.  I just need to wear the thing in the wedding, um, today.

Yes, some of the ladies were over and we spent a few hours reminiscing and drinking.  Pretty much equal on those.  I'm currently finishing up a glass of absinthe that one of them didn't like so much.  A small glass.  Really.

I did end up making jewelry.  I made a lovely triple strand necklace and matching earrings.  At this time it's still uncertain if I get to wear it or the bride.  She hasn't made up her mind.  Go figure.

Rehearsal was .. interesting.  The mother of the bride had very definite ideas on how the ceremony should go.  Let's just say that not all of them were heeded.  She didn't like that very much.

Now I'm off to bed so I can sleep for a few hours before all the pre-wedding festivities happen.  And of course, they all happen at my house so it's going to be a very interesting day.  It's an afternoon wedding so I should have the evening to recover.
