Update on the tedium

February 8th, 2008 No comments

Yes, I said tedium.  Making terrain isn't all sweetness and light.  Sometimes it is boring, grueling work.  Or at least repetitive.  I personally don't like making a lot of the same thing at once but there are times when that needs to be done.  So I sign onto my favorite chat channels and chat while I do this.

Here's how some of the books look with the covers completed.  Please note, only a very few of them will actually have the covers showing.  So the ones that look really odd and/or really bad won't be at the front of the stack.  I looked at this as a time to practice my freehand.  Yes, I know more practice is in order.

There's less than 1/4 of the original amount left to complete.  Which is good.  Because I'll be working away nicely and find my inspiration has gone somewhere .. else.  So that means I pack it up for the night.

Also, since I couldn't really fit the books into the existing bookcases I have new ones being built.  They're on the magnet board tonight and should be ready for detailing and painting in a day or so.

This thing might actually get done!

Some books are done!

February 4th, 2008 No comments

I'm having problems keeping the patterns and designs random.  Especially the spine decorations.  So if anyone has any hints go ahead and post them in a comment.

For reference, the shelf is 2 inches tall by 1 3/4 inches wide.

I used gel pens to decorate the books and alchemical symbols for the writing.  Since the spines are going to be what's visible on most of the books I'm trying to get those looking good.  And the books with good covers will be used more prominently.

I think this is going to work out very well!

Finished with the darn books!

Well, not completely finished.  I still need to make them unique by painting and other means.  But the tedious task of making and attaching the covers is done.

That's quite a pile of books.

Let’s all go to the lobby…

That's my way of saying there's an intermission.

I'm completing books now that the scrolls are done but there's nothing to show for it yet.  I've got some mostly completed books and realized that I needed a whole lot more books.  So I cut, sanded and scribed the next batch last night.

Tonight I painted the innards in preparation for putting the paper covers on them.

After all that I can start painting the covers and spines.  I know most of the covers won't be seen but this is a perfect opportunity for me to practice this kind of thing and I'm going to take it.

Side story.  I was tearing apart my craft room looking for a certain very perfect kind of cardstock for the book covers.  Tearing it apart, putting things where they actually belonged, tearing other areas apart.  I never did find it so I used some cardstock I had bought for another project.

Since I no longer do rubber stamping I have a lot of kinds of cardstock packed away (too heavy to ship to make it worth selling on eBay).  Some of my coworkers do stamping and scrapbooking so I dug out the box.  Lo and behold, in the bottom of the box was the cardstock I was looking for in the first place.

So I have the paper I originally wanted and I don't have a box of paper taking up room in the attic storage area.  Win-win.

Hopefully I'll have some pictures up in a day or so of the finished products.  After I finish the books I'll be gluing them and scrolls into shelves I already have made.
